Exmoor in Autumn…but it’s raining!

As you whip open the bedroom curtains and rub your tired morning eyes, you’ll surely be greeted by a glut of autumnal colour cast over Lynmouth harbour as the sun rises.

With the smell of smoky log burners, the glow of awakening café lights and the light tapping of morning dog walkers’ feet, the streets of Lynmouth and Lynton await daily conversation…

BUT…it’s raining today – what are we going to do? So familiarly asked and so confidently answered….

“Do you have a rain jacket and a couple of hours to spare? Well, you must take the spectacular romantic riverside walk to Watersmeet tea rooms! You won’t need a flask as the tea rooms will greet you with a selection of coffees, cakes and savouries. It’s also a place to spot Dippers, Wagtails, Brown Trout and our resident heron near Myrtleberry house. Your dog will love you for it, but watch out for those ticks!”

Bobbing Dippers frequent the river up to Watersmeet – see how many you can spot!

We fully recommend calling in to the tea rooms at Watersmeet – but bear in mind that you’ll need a face-mask with you, and to check the opening hours. While you can’t sit inside at the moment, the gardens are open with lots of benches so make sure you’re dressed appropriately for a potentially damp outing! Head to their website by clicking here for more information (as well as a couple of fantastic recipes!).

“So, what about afterwards?”

“You must go and see the model railway on Watersmeet Road; it’s for adults too you know! Then take a real funicular Cliff Railway to Lynton.”

Hitch a ride up to Lynton on our world famous Cliff Railway.

Lynton and Lynmouths’s attractions, cafes and shops are safer and more cautious than ever, There’s always a warm welcome and unforgettable memories – your patience and kindness will always be remembered too! Return back to our warm and snug Ancient Mariner bar to treat your taste buds from our fruitful gin or dark rums menu (we also have lots of lovely soft drinks, and a fantastic selection of teas and coffees).
