Back in July, we helped to organise the second Lynmouth Regatta and Maritime Festival – a traditional day of sea shanty singing, Seagull Racing (probably not what you’re thinking if you’re not a boaty type…!), stalls, games and water based fun raising money for the local Sailing Club (not for profit) and the Devon Air Ambulance.
We’ve just noticed this lovely blog, and it’s worth having a read through for an outsiders perspective on Lynton and Lynmouth, as well as the festival itself.

We are absolutely delighted to announce the installation of a new sculpture at The Ancient Mariner. Those who have visited our bar and restaurant before will know that it’s filled with a curious collection of maritime artifacts, and this man-made mollusc is certainly adding to our quota!
We commissioned local sculptor and artist, Ned Morgan, to install a giant octopus, made from recycled materials in our Exmoor bar and restaurant, The Ancient Mariner. Ned is in the process of making the final adjustments to the (thus far) nameless octopus who will be emerging from the wall, tentacles first, when he’s finished. There may even be a tentacle bursting through the window to grab passers by…you’ll have to wait and see!
Ned’s website is HERE, and a link to his Facebook page is HERE.
See the process below, and we’ll keep you posted on an unveiling date.
Winter Ridge is a crime thriller, shot entirely in North Devon, mainly in Lynton and Lynmouth. Director, Dom Lenoir and producer and lead actor Matt Hookings popped in to see us today.
Danielle (far right of the photograph), who works in reception at The Bath Hotel , was involved in the filming of Winter Ridge and you can spot her in the background as an extra! The cast and crew stayed with us back in 2017 when they were filming and loved The Ancient Mariner bar and restaurant in particular.
Winter Ridge has won several prestigious awards in the film world already, having completed a very successful American film tour. The have won a whole host of awards, which you can see on their Facebook page, HERE and on their poster above.
Best of luck with the UK tour, keep an eye out for this fantastic British film near you soon!
Updated on the 29th of August…
We’re delighted to be serving Sunday Roast from 12pm to 8:30pm (that’s right, all day roast!) along with a selection from our usual menu. For your roast, you can choose from top side of beef, shoulder of pork, rump of lamb, or roasted butternut squash. All served with seasonal veg, crispy roast potatoes, homemade Yorkshire pudding, cauliflower cheese and as much gravy as you like.
Those of you who have visited our bar and restaurant before, The Ancient Mariner, may well have seen our collection of unusual and wonderful maritime bits and pieces that we have on display.
Outside, there is a rather large torpedo – obviously. It can cause a few raised eyebrows at check in to the hotel when we direct guests to park their car ‘close to the torpedo’…but then, we’ve never liked being ordinary.
Today, lovely local sign writer, Heidi Baker, has added our bar logo to the torpedo which has had a bit of a face lift.
Come and have your photograph taken with the Exmoor torpedo! Which is definitely not pointing at Wales. Nope. Definitely not (it’s being moved soon…!)
Clicking on the photographs will redirect you to The Ancient Mariner Facebook page.
Congratulations to our competition winner, who was the lucky recipient of a 2 night stay in one of our gorgeous newly refurbished rooms, The Fo’c’sle. Keep an eye on our social media pages for the next competition later on in the year!
